Amman, Nov. 13 (Petra) – Minister of Health Ibrahim Badour underscored that psychosocial support constitutes a fundamental pillar in promoting public health and improving quality of life, noting that individuals with sound mental well-being are more productive, socially engaged, and capable of maintaining strong human and community relationships.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support project held on Thursday at the Jordanian Health Forum of the Ministry of Health, Badour said the initiative was implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in close coordination with the Ministry.

He detailed that the Ministry of Health attaches significant importance to integrating psychosocial support services within the comprehensive healthcare system to ensure equitable access for all segments of society. The ministry, he added, is advancing national strategies and partnerships with local and international institutions to enhance community mental health services, expand prevention and early intervention programs, and train healthcare professionals to deliver services that uphold human dignity and address individual needs.

Badour highlighted that the ministry is working to incorporate psychosocial support principles into health centers and hospitals, fostering a holistic therapeutic environment that treats both body and mind, in line with the Kingdom’s vision for sustainable development and comprehensive health for all citizens.

He noted that Jordan has made considerable progress in strengthening psychosocial support services within the healthcare system through a series of national initiatives and programs implemented over the past years.

Jonas Lucas, Development Counsellor at the German Embassy in Amman, emphasized that Germany’s partnership with Jordan remains strategic and is grounded in shared values and mutual objectives. He reaffirmed Germany’s enduring commitment to cooperation with the Hashemite Kingdom, recognizing its vital regional and international role.

Lux stated that the conclusion of this project marks the beginning of a new phase of collaboration and development, continuing a decade-long partnership dedicated to enhancing psychosocial support services in Jordan and strengthening the capacities of healthcare professionals.

According to project results, more than 2,900 individuals benefited from improved mental health and social services, and over 800 people received specialized psychosocial support training. Three universities organized ten community-based courses on psychosocial support, while the Ministry launched its Staff Care and Self-Care policy, established a Staff Care Center, and trained 14 core trainers who carried out more than 230 activities in various health facilities.
