Amman, Feb. 2 (Petra) -- The Lower House's Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday discussed with Greek Ambassador to Jordan Irene Riga ways to enhance cooperation, as well as regional issues of mutual interest.

The committee's chair, MP Haitham Ziadin, highlighted the deep, historical relations between Jordan and Greece, pointing to the Kingdom’s role in addressing the repercussions of successive waves of refugees and the pressure they posed on the national infrastructure and resources.

Ziadin stressed the importance of Athens' backing for the positions of His Majesty King Abdullah II on various issues, particularly the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and efforts to halt the aggression on Gaza. He noted European Union support of Jordan.

Committee members also underscored the need to boost cooperation between the two countries in all fields, noting Greece’s rich culture and heritage.

Riga reaffirmed the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and expressed her country’s support for the positions of His Majesty the King on various regional issues.

Jordan, she pointed out, is a voice of moderation and reason in a volatile region, and a strategic partner of the EU.

The Greek envoy also commended Jordan’s efforts in addressing the refugee issue and announced that her country will contribute to the reconstruction of Gaza. She praised Jordanian initiatives to end the war.
