Amman, Jan 7 (Petra) – The Lower House's Energy and Mineral Resources Committee on Wednesday debated rising electricity bills during a meeting with representatives of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Engineers Association.
Chairman of the committee, MP Ayman Abu Hanieh, stressed the need to continue monitoring electricity tariffs and enhancing bill transparency for clients to understand the billing details and calculation methods, and ensure practical measures are taken to mitigate the impact of seasonal increases on the public. This will achieve a balance between consumer protection and the electricity sector's sustainability, he added.
The committee addressed the reasons for increases on some bills during the winter, particularly households using heating and water heating devices, as well as grid high loads during cold weather and the shift of some clients to higher tariff brackets.
MPs spoke about complaints by citizens on high power bills during the month of December, urging a review of the billing processes.
For his part, EMRC Board of Commissioners Chairman Ziad Al-Sa’aydeh said the commission is up to its oversight and regulatory role to ensure fair electricity tariffs and transparent billing to protect consumers' rights and ensure quality service.
The commission, he said, is continuing intensive awareness campaigns in cooperation with electricity companies to enhance understanding of consumption patterns during winter and rationalizing consumption, which will curb seasonal price increases and ensure fairness and transparency.
