Amman, Dec. 17 (Petra)- Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan on Wednesday chaired the first meeting of the preparatory committee tasked with drafting the executive program to curb the random dumping of waste.
During the meeting, held at the Prime Ministry, Hassan said behaviors related to random littering are unacceptable and must not be left without deterrence, stressing that maintaining public cleanliness is a shared responsibility between institutions and citizens.
The prime minister instructed relevant ministries and agencies to step up public cleanup campaigns, alongside enforcing the law and applying penalties against violators who dispose of waste randomly.
He pointed to the need for public cleanliness efforts to be continuous rather than seasonal, underscoring the importance of synchronizing these efforts with awareness campaigns in schools, universities, places of worship and the media.
He also directed the intensification of the role of municipalities, ministries and the Greater Amman Municipality in monitoring random dumping of waste and construction debris, ensuring their proper disposal, and confronting any violations without hesitation. He highlighted the importance of incorporating electronic monitoring as a core component of the system for environmental protection and public cleanliness.
The meeting reviewed the executive program to curb random dumping of waste, which is based on an integrated institutional effort covering all governorates and regions of the Kingdom.
The Cabinet had decided at its session last Sunday to form a steering committee to prepare and follow up on the implementation of the executive program to curb random dumping of waste for the years 2026–2027.
The committee was tasked with coordinating with relevant bodies to incorporate into the program the necessary measures to improve cleanliness levels in public places, launch national awareness campaigns, and enhance monitoring and enforcement of relevant laws and legislation as part of the government’s efforts to promote positive environmental behavior and improve public cleanliness across the Kingdom.
The committee is chaired by the Minister of Environment and includes the ministers of local administration, public works and housing, government communication, awqaf and Islamic affairs and holy sites, interior, finance, agriculture, tourism and antiquities, the head of the Greater Amman Municipality committee, and the director of public security directorate.
