Amman, Oct. 20 (Petra) – Her Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT), met Monday with a delegation from the International Organization for Science and Technology for Sustainable Development (COMSATS), led by Executive Director Muhammad Zakaria, during the organization’s three-day visit to the university.

The meeting, attended by PSUT President Wijdan Abu Haija, a representative from the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizatio (ICESCO), and senior officials from the Royal Scientific Society, focused on strengthening collaboration in scientific research, applied technology, and sustainable development initiatives.

Princess Sumaya underscored the longstanding partnership between Jordanian institutions and COMSATS, highlighting the Royal Scientific Society’s Industrial Chemistry Center as one of the organization’s first centers of excellence since 1997. She emphasized that science and technology must serve humanity, sustainable development, and social welfare, and praised the PSUT’s efforts in preparing a new generation of scientists and engineers equipped to apply emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, for societal benefit.

The workshop component of the visit addressed transparency, governance, ethics, social cohesion, and data management in deploying reliable artificial intelligence. Experts from the visiting delegation and Marcelo Knobel, Executive Director of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), who participated virtually, contributed to discussions and recommendations for ethical AI application.

Abu Haija reaffirmed the university’s commitment to aligning academic and research programs with national priorities and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting initiatives such as startup support funds, the Entrepreneurship Lab, the Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship, and the iPark business hub to promote innovation and support emerging enterprises.

Zakaria expressed appreciation for the PSUT’s leadership in harnessing technology for development and education and expressed a commitment to expand joint research and capacity-building programs with the Royal Scientific Society and the university.

The delegation’s visit concluded with field tours of the Royal Scientific Society laboratories and the presentation of a set of guidelines and recommendations to ensure AI applications adhere to ethical standards, social values, and regulatory frameworks.
