Amman, Dec. 23 (Petra) - Princess Sumaya University for Technology on Tuesday hosted Jordanian scientist Omar Hatamleh, Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

Hatamleh delivered a lecture titled "Transforming the Future," attended by University President Wejdan Abu Elhaija, members of the Deans’ Council, faculty members and students.

According to a university statement issued Tuesday, Hatamleh said during his lecture that artificial intelligence has become a comprehensive force reshaping various aspects of human life, including education, the economy, medicine and the labor market, creating a fundamental transformation in its use and societal impact.

He stressed that the medical sector is among the most benefited, particularly in early diagnosis, supporting physicians with the latest medical research, and improving the efficiency of healthcare systems.

Hatamleh also reviewed the ethical challenges associated with the development of artificial intelligence technologies, noting that they are more complex than the technological challenges themselves, which necessitates establishing ethical frameworks based on transparency, justice, privacy protection and respect for human rights.

He added that in an era dominated by artificial intelligence tools, it is essential to strengthen adaptability skills, critical thinking and the ability to pursue continuous learning.

On the sidelines of the lecture, a panel discussion moderated by Serin Atiani, a data scientist and systems neuroscientist at the university, addressed several topics, most notably artificial intelligence and emerging technological research at NASA, the need for a radical shift in thinking patterns, and the importance of intellectual capabilities in a rapidly changing world.

During the discussion, Hatamleh presented ideas that could enable Jordan to secure a distinctive position in the artificial intelligence–based technology market, directing students toward entrepreneurial project ideas (startups) with real prospects for success in the AI market.

University students discussed the challenge of balancing the development of artificial intelligence technologies with preserving individuals’ privacy and independence and ways to benefit from technological progress without falling into complete dependence on it.

Abu Elhaija presented the university’s shield to Hatamleh in appreciation of his scientific contributions.
