Amman, Nov. 25 (Petra) - The National Human Rights Center on Tuesday outlined national efforts to protect women from violence, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed this year under the theme "End Digital Violence against Women and Girls." In a statement, the center noted that the Jordanian Constitution and its amendments affirm equality, non-discrimination, and protection from all forms of violence and discrimination.

It also highlighted Jordan’s ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, published in the Official Gazette in 2007, as well as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which provides safeguards for women with disabilities.

The center pointed to a series of national laws that strengthen protection, including the Domestic Violence Protection Law and the 2024 Social Development Law, which shifts social services toward empowerment and productivity and provides shelter and support for survivors of domestic violence and women at risk.

It also cited the National Social Protection Strategy (2025–2033), which aims to build a more inclusive and resilient society through expanded and sustainable social services.

The center said it monitors compliance with international treaties related to women’s rights, and works to expand secure and rapid reporting channels for all forms of violence, including digital abuse. It also offers specialized legal and psychological support for survivors.

It called for bolstering women’s awareness and skills in navigating emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, reviewing national legislation to ensure all forms of online violence are criminalized, and strengthening cooperation among relevant institutions to improve protection mechanisms.

The statement also emphasized the need to build the capacity of service providers and staff in women’s shelters, uphold rights in line with international standards, and provide treatment for psychological distress, behavioral issues, and anger management, all within a human-rights-based approach.

The United Nations established Nov. 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1999 to raise global awareness of violence facing women and girls and to mobilize efforts to end it.
