Amman, April 5 (Petra) -- Senate President Faisal al-Fayez called for activating the Joint Arab Defence Treaty signed in 1950 to strengthen the system of collective Arab security and defence.
Fayez stressed the importance of advancing Arab economic unity, saying it would pave the way for more effective regional integration. He said Arab countries, with their human and economic resources, are capable of becoming a regional and global force comparable to other powers, enabling them to maintain independent political decision-making and safeguard their interests.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, Fayez urged the adoption of a unified Arab vision capable of protecting shared interests and addressing regional challenges, grounded in political will and genuine integration among Arab states. He added that Iran’s expansionist ambitions in the Arab region are no less dangerous than what he described as Israeli expansionist threats.
Fayez said Jordan’s positions are based on firm principles established by His Majesty King Abdullah II, reflecting what he described as the Hashemite leadership's wisdom and commitment to national security and regional stability. He reiterated that "Jordan will not allow itself to become a battleground for any party," adding that Iranian missile and drone attacks on Jordan and other Arab countries are "unacceptable, rejected, and condemned." He also stressed that the security of Gulf states is an integral part of Jordan’s security.
He said that intensive diplomatic efforts led by His Majesty, with Gulf leaders and world figures, reflect a strategic vision aimed at preventing further escalation. He pointed to a trilateral summit bringing together Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar in Jeddah, which condemned attacks targeting vital facilities and stressed the need for clear security guarantees for Arab states in any future settlement, as well as the importance of unified positions and continued coordination to confront regional challenges.
Fayez said that despite Jordan’s political strength and institutional resilience under His Majesty's leadership, the country faces growing economic pressures due to regional conditions and rising energy prices, alongside security challenges on its borders, particularly drug smuggling and drone activity. He underlined the need for a supportive Arab stance toward Jordan, especially given the additional burdens it faces.
He added that the current phase, including the post-war period, requires an "Arab awakening" based on unified efforts and strengthened joint action, stressing that the security of Jordan and Gulf states is indivisible and that greater self-reliance and the building of an integrated Arab system politically, economically and militarily have become an urgent necessity.
Fayez lauded the firm and courageous positions led by His Majesty King Abdullah in defending Jordan’s security, safeguarding its supreme interests, maintaining stability and supporting just Arab causes. He said the Senate and the Jordanian people stand united behind the king, backing his vision and positions in confronting challenges and preserving the country’s security, sovereignty and stability.
