Amman, Oct. 22 (Petra) The Senate delegation, headed by Speaker Faisal Al-Fayez, continued on Wednesday its active participation in the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to a statement from the Senate, Senator Hael Obeidat took part in the IPU’s general debate under the theme "Upholding Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis." He also attended the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, discussing "the UN Secretary-General Election: Working Methods and Core Principles" and the UN initiative for comprehensive UN reform.
Obeidat noted that 80 years after the UN’s establishment as the League of Nations’ successor, reform is urgently needed to restructure the organization, enhance its independence, and prevent domination by permanent members. He emphasized the necessity of revising permanent membership based on geographical, economic, and demographic justice, citing the long-standing marginalization of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He also called for governance reforms, equitable use of veto rights, and transparent restructuring of UN agencies.
Obeidat criticized the UN’s failure to resolve international conflicts, highlighting Israel’s two-year siege and humanitarian aggression in Gaza, and praised Jordan’s role under His Majesty King Abdullah II in providing vital food and humanitarian aid.
Senator Ammar Qudah participated in the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, addressing arms control, disarmament, and parliamentary oversight of defense spending. He highlighted that arms races escalate political tensions, deplete resources, and threaten international peace despite legal frameworks and disarmament initiatives. Qudah emphasized that balancing military power with ethical and legal responsibility is key to sustainable peace, noting the link between arms proliferation, crime, and social instability.
Senator Asia Yaghi attended meetings of the Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, discussing decisions on recognizing and supporting victims of international adoption and measures to prevent its misuse.
