Amman, Sept. 16 (Petra) -- The Senate's Jordanian-Spanish Friendship Committee met with Spanish Ambassador José Luis Pardo Cuerdo on Wednesday to look into prospects of enhancing relations and building a strategic partnership.

Chair of the committee Senator Abla Amawi said the two countries shared a strategic alignment rooted not only in diplomatic ties, but also in decades of personal bonds between the Hashemite and Spanish royal families, dating to the era of His Majesty the late King Hussein and King Juan Carlos I, and continuing under King Abdullah II and King Felipe VI.

She said Jordan and Spain face the same pressures, including energy transition, climate resilience, supply chain security and regional stability. On the Palestinian issue, Amawi said Palestine is not merely a foreign policy file for Jordan but a cause tied to its history, security and moral responsibility.

Amawi commended Madrid's recognition of Palestinian statehood and support of a two-state solution, and called for enhancing European-Arab political dialogue.

Amawi called for viewing Mediterranean cooperation as a strategic political and economic structure spanning energy, water, food security, digital transformation and AI, education and skills, trade and logistics, youth employment, migration, and tourism and cultural heritage.

She also highlighted the importance of the Baptism Site as one of Jordan's foremost religious and historical landmarks, stressing the importance of preparing for 2030, which marks 2,000 years since the baptism of Jesus Christ, to boost religious tourism, promote the Kingdom's heritage sites and attract more visitors and pilgrims.

For his part, the Spanish envoy noted the deep relations with Jordan, and said a two-state solution of the Palestinian issue would bring about just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
