Beirut, May 7 (Petra)-- Six people were killed in two Israeli airstrikes targeting the towns of Tora and Blat in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, according to a Lebanese security source.
The source told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) correspondent in Beirut that Lebanese Red Cross teams entered the town of Blat after coordinating with the ceasefire monitoring committee and recovered the bodies of three victims killed in the strike on the town.
The source added that, since 9 a.m. local time, Israeli warplanes and drones have carried out successive strikes on towns in the Nabatieh and Tyre districts, accompanied by heavy artillery shelling.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called on European Union countries to pressure Israel to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and halt the demolition and bulldozing of homes in southern villages still under occupation, as well as attacks targeting paramedics, journalists, and civil defense personnel.
In a statement issued following his meeting with a delegation from the European Commission for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Aoun said Lebanon remains committed to a full ceasefire and the cessation of all military operations in order to launch negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing instability in the south.
He said the negotiations should pave the way for the redeployment of the Lebanese army up to the international border, the release of Lebanese detainees, and the return of displaced residents to their towns and villages.
Aoun stressed that the ceasefire "must be complete and comprehensive," pointing to the heavy human losses caused by Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the displacement of nearly one million people, and the extensive material damage inflicted on homes, property, and farmland.
He added that the humanitarian needs of displaced people are increasing day by day, prompting Lebanon to appeal to friendly and allied nations for urgent humanitarian and development assistance.
The Lebanese president also thanked the European Union for its continued support and its commitment to Lebanon’s full sovereignty over all its territory.
