Tafileh, Aug. 2 (Petra) -- Tafileh Governor Sultan al-Madi met on Sunday with UNHCR Representative Maria Stavropoulou to discuss the refugees' situation in the southern governorate and Jordan's efforts to provide humanitarian care and services to this group.

During the meeting, Al-Madi affirmed the Kingdom's "leading" humanitarian role, under King Abdullah II's leadership, in hosting refugees and providing protection and care for them, based on its humanitarian mission and moral commitment despite the economic challenges and limited resources it faces.

Rreviewing state of current services provided to refugees in Tafileh governorate, he noted efforts made by various official and partner bodies to ensure provision of basic services and improve the level of humanitarian response, in line with Jordan's approach based on respect for human dignity.

For her part, Stavropoulou expressed "deep" gratitude and appreciation to King Abdullah II and the Jordanian people for the care and hospitality extended to refugees.

She also affirmed Jordan represents a "global model" in humanitarian work, alongside its adoption of numerous plans and programs supporting refugees that have contributed to improving their living conditions.

Praising values of generosity and hospitality shown by Jordanians, she said this stance reflects "deep-rooted" Hashemite principles, commending the Kingdom's continued commitment to this noble humanitarian role despite difficult economic conditions and regional challenges.

Both sides urged continued joint cooperation and coordination between official bodies and UNHCR to strengthen the humanitarian response and provide the best possible services to refugees, while also paying attention for needs of host communities.
