Amman, May 6 (Petra) -- President of the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) Khaled Fanatseh on Wednesday discussed cooperation with the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Modernizing Education, Skills, and Administrative Reforms (MASAR) project team, in the presence of Project Manager Alia Odeh and ILO Senior Specialist on Gender Equality and Non Discrimination Aya Matsuura.
Odeh briefed participants on MASAR and its objectives, which focus on providing a safe and decent work environment for workers with disabilities and domestic workers, while ensuring their protection in the workplace, the GFJTU said in a statement.
She also reviewed key activities implemented during the previous period, including workshops involving labor unions that focused on their role in strengthening the rights of workers with disabilities and domestic workers.
The two sides agreed to form a committee under the GFJTU umbrella to represent workers with disabilities that will provide a union framework to enhance their representation, defend their rights in the labor market and help improve their working conditions and work environment.
The two sides also tackled next steps, including building the capacities of committee members in trade union work and committee procedures, as well as launching a media campaign to raise labor awareness among workers with disabilities and domestic workers.
Fanatseh expressed the GFJTU’s full support for the project’s objectives and its commitment to providing all necessary support to ensure the committee’s success, including allocating a workspace for it inside the federation’s headquarters.
He said workers with disabilities and domestic workers are among the groups that require greater protection in the labor market, commending the ILO’s efforts to improve their working conditions and terms of employment.
The ILO-implemented project in Jordan seeks to promote decent work and the care economy, while supporting national efforts to enhance women’s participation in the labor market, reduce decent work gaps and strengthen equality and inclusion, in line with Jordan’s commitments under the National Strategy for Women and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
The project works with the Ministry of Labor, the Jordan Chamber of Industry, the GFJTU and other relevant partners by generating evidence through monitoring, studies and demographic assessments in selected care sectors, facilitating national dialogue and building capacities to strengthen measures related to the care economy, equality, inclusion and decent work.
