TRC Warns Border Residents Against Automatic International Roaming Charges

Amman, Mar. 26 (Petra) – The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) issued an urgent advisory on Thursday to mobile phone users residing in or visiting the Kingdom’s border regions, urging them to manually manage their network settings to avoid unexpected international roaming fees.
In a statement, the regulatory body recommended that users either disable the "Data Roaming" feature entirely or manually select their local Jordanian service provider from the device’s network settings.
The directive aims to mitigate the "spillover" effect, where mobile devices automatically latch onto stronger cellular signals from neighboring countries' networks. This unintended handoff can trigger international roaming rates for outgoing and incoming calls, SMS messages, and data usage – often resulting in significant "bill shock" for subscribers who believe they are still connected to local towers.
The TRC emphasized that proactive manual selection of the network is the most effective safeguard for those living in frontier areas, ensuring that devices remain locked to domestic infrastructure regardless of signal fluctuations from across the border.
