Amman, Oct. 20 (Petra) – United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Monday expressed the UN’s concern "over all acts of violence in Gaza and the reported attacks and airstrikes that occurred yesterday." At the daily press briefing in New York, Dujarric said the organization remains cautiously optimistic following renewed commitments by the parties to implement the ceasefire in Gaza, praising the persistent efforts of mediators in this context.

He urged all parties to fulfill their obligations to protect civilians "and avoid any actions that could lead to a resumption of hostilities and undermine humanitarian operations." In a related development, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stressed the need to uphold the "fragile" ceasefire in Gaza.

"Yesterday, four people were killed following shelling by Israeli forces of an UNRWA school-turned-shelter in Nuseirat refugee camp. More are reported injured," Lazzarini in a post on X.

He added that UNRWA buildings across the Gaza Strip were transformed into shelters for displaced people seeking refuge and protection of the UN at the start of the war.

"Since the war began, more than 800 people have been killed and nearly 2,600 injured in separate incidents affecting 300 UNRWA premises," Lazzarini said.

He reiterated his call for independent investigations into these blatant breaches of international humanitarian law.
