New York, May 5 (Petra) -- The United States announced on Tuesday that it has drafted a UN Security Council resolution aimed at defending the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. State Department said in a press statement that the draft resolution mandates Iran to cease all attacks, sea-mining operations, and the imposition of transit fees. Furthermore, the resolution requires Iran to disclose the number and locations of any naval mines it has deployed and to cooperate with international efforts for their removal. It also calls for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor in the region.

The statement added that the United States intends to bring the draft resolution to a vote in the coming days. Washington is currently seeking support from UN Security Council members and aims to secure a broad base of co-sponsoring nations for the initiative.
