US tech sell-off drags Nasdaq down 579 points, S&P 500 slumps 1.4%

New York, June 23 (Petra) -- The US tech sector suffered another day of sharp losses on Tuesday, pulling the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index down 579 points, or 2.21 percent, to close at 25,587 points.

Major mega-cap technology firms, including Alphabet (Google), Nvidia, Oracle, and Tesla, remained firmly in negative territory at the closing bell, extending a broader market correction triggered by heavy losses in big tech the previous day.

The benchmark S&P 500 index fell roughly 107 points, or 1.44 percent, to settle at 7,365 points. The index was heavily weighed down by chipmaker Micron Technology, whose shares slumped approximately 12 percent recently amid broader concerns over the sustainability of aggressive artificial intelligence spending and chip industry trends.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which holds a lighter concentration of technology equities, fared better, shedding 45 points to close at 51,666 points.

Meanwhile, in energy markets, the price of US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude eased, falling to $73.37 per barrel.
