Amman, May 7 (Petra) -- Jordan on Wednesday launched the management and operation contract for Yarmouk Water Company (YWC)’s water and wastewater services with global company Veolia.
The step aimed at improving service quality, operational efficiency, and financial sustainability in the northern governorates.
Talking at the launching ceremony, Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Saud said the contract aims to strengthen water and wastewater services in Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash, and Mafraq, which fall within the company’s service jurisdiction.
He added that the experience will yield "tangible" results for citizens by rolling out modern systems, advanced practices, and the use of artificial intelligence in managing water and wastewater services.
Abu Saud said citizens will see a "qualitative improvement in service quality, faster response times, and stronger performance and financial stability" at Yarmouk Water Company through the partnership with Veolia.
He said the management contract covers supervision of Yarmouk Water Company’s operation and maintenance activities and implementation of a management model based on measuring and monitoring performance indicators, with clear targets and defined responsibilities.
The contract will support internal systems, improve governance and oversight, and develop staff capacities to ensure sustainable improvements throughout its implementation period.
Abu Saud said the water sector is "accelerating" efforts to improve performance and address challenges under the Economic Modernization Vision and the Water Strategy 2023-2040 by strengthening partnerships with the private sector to improve services provided to citizens.
On its vision, he said the sector seeks to transfer "successful" water management models across the Kingdom and bring about a qualitative improvement in water and wastewater services, particularly in the northern governorates.
Abu Saud said these efforts focus on improving service delivery, increasing water supply efficiency, reducing water losses, lowering energy costs, and strengthening service sustainability.
He noted these steps would also improve sector management and institutional performance, and expand private sector partnership in line with environmental, social, financial, and economic standards.
He also commended the efforts of the Planning and Management Unit and the team involved in completing the required work, noting the technical team that will manage the company in the coming period has extensive experience in the field.
Veolia is a global company specializing in water and wastewater management, with successful water management experience in 56 countries. It has 215,000 employees and manages 3,879 water treatment plants and 3,198 wastewater treatment plants.
The company seeks to improve water and wastewater service management in the northern governorates by advancing operations, improving performance efficiency, building operational capacity, strengthening and sustaining Yarmouk Water Company’s financial position, improving service quality, and enhancing governance and digital transformation.
