Amman, Nov. 18 (Petra) The UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned Tuesday that the world is facing a deepening global hunger crisis as available resources fall short of meeting urgent needs.

According to WFP’s 2026 projections, 318 million people are expected to face severe or worse levels of hunger next year a staggering figure that is more than double the number recorded in 2019. Despite this surge, declining global humanitarian funding has forced the agency to prioritize food assistance for only about one-third of those in need.

WFP aims to reach 110 million of the most vulnerable people in 2026 at an estimated cost of $13 billion. Current funding forecasts, however, suggest the agency may secure only about half of that amount.

In a statement published on the organization’s official website, WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain said the world is witnessing "simultaneous famines in Gaza and parts of Sudan something wholly unacceptable in the twenty-first century." "Hunger is becoming more entrenched across the globe," McCain added. "WFP has repeatedly shown that early, effective and innovative interventions save lives and transform communities but we desperately need more support to keep this vital work going." Petra
