Yarmouk Water, German Delegation Discuss Strategic Water Projects

Irbid, July 6 (Petra) -- General Manager of the Yarmouk Water Company Ghislain Juvanon met a German delegation on Monday to discuss strengthening cooperation and supporting priority water and wastewater projects aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing service efficiency and sustainability across northern governorates.

The delegation included German Embassy in Amman Development Cooperation Representative Laura Schnettler, Country Desk Officer at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Nicolas von Kalm, and representatives of the German Development Bank (KfW), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

Juvanon outlined the company's key operational and institutional challenges, as well as its financing and investment needs for water and wastewater infrastructure and network rehabilitation projects.

He stressed the importance of directing support toward priority projects that improve operational efficiency, enhance service reliability, and ensure sustainable water services for residents in northern Jordan.

He said the partnership with German institutions is a key pillar in advancing strategic projects, expanding international cooperation to address water scarcity, developing infrastructure, and strengthening water resources management.

Yarmouk Water Company Management Contract Director Ahmad Awamleh underscored the importance of closer coordination with donors and international institutions, particularly Germany's water-sector partners, in line with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation's directives to mobilize funding for priority projects and improve the sustainability of water and wastewater services.

Awamleh reviewed the outcomes of the company's management contract, saying it supports the Economic Modernization Vision and the National Water Strategy 2023-2040 by improving operational performance, reducing water losses, enhancing customer services, strengthening financial and institutional sustainability, and building staff capacity through measurable performance indicators.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of securing a €15 million grant to finance priority projects that would further develop infrastructure, improve the efficiency of water and wastewater systems, and support service sustainability.

For his part, Nicolas von Kalm said direct dialogue with Yarmouk Water Company provides an opportunity to better understand its priorities and the challenges facing the water sector in northern Jordan. He praised the company's development plans and stressed the importance of translating them into tangible improvements in operational efficiency and service sustainability.

He added that the visit strengthens communication with the company and opens the door to exploring new areas of cooperation and sustainable development projects, expressing hope for continued collaboration in the coming period.

The delegation also toured the Wadi Al Arab Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Wadi Al Arab Hydropower Station, where members were briefed on water management operations, groundwater management, water quality monitoring, sustainable sludge management, and energy projects linked to the water sector.
