Zarqa rallies behind national football team ahead of World Cup clash with Argentina

Zarqa, June 27 (Petra) -- The Zarqa Governorate is preparing to welcome what many describe as one of the most significant sporting moments in the country's football history, as public and official support continues to build ahead of the national team's World Cup match against Argentina early on Sunday.

The atmosphere across the governorate reflects widespread national pride after Jordan secured a historic place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the country's first appearance at football's biggest global tournament.

Khaled Al-Khashman, chairman of Zarqa Municipality's committee, announced that the match would be broadcast live on giant screens at the Royal Urban Village in the Ramzi neighbourhood. He invited residents to attend the public event, which will begin at 5 a.m., saying admission would be free as fans gather to support the Nashama in their third World Cup match.

The initiatives come amid strong public backing for the national team, whose performances and fighting spirit have become a source of pride for Jordanians. The team's achievements have projected a positive image of Jordanian sport on the global stage in what many regard as an inspiring national success story reflecting determination, resilience and the ability to compete against the world's leading football nations.

Samir Al-Fakhouri, head of the All Jordan Youth Commission in Zarqa, said technical and logistical preparations at the commission's headquarters had been completed to receive football fans for the historic match against Argentina.

He said a state-of-the-art giant screen and the latest sports broadcasting systems had been installed to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality coverage of the match, allowing supporters to follow every moment in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and national pride. He added that the commission's headquarters would serve as a gathering place for young people and supporters backing the national team throughout its World Cup campaign.

Young supporters Ruba Al-Qaisi, Odeh Al-Zawahreh and Haitham Al-Zawahreh expressed pride in Jordan's historic achievement in reaching the tournament, saying a match against a team of Argentina's stature represents an exceptional milestone that has further strengthened national pride and boosted public enthusiasm for supporting the players, whose performances have reflected the character and competitive spirit of Jordanian football.

Jordanians widely agree that the national team's World Cup campaign represents a landmark national achievement worthy of celebration, saying the players have earned the respect of football fans through their courageous performances and fighting spirit, making the Nashama a symbol of national pride and Jordanian determination and ambition.
