Petra, Oct. 5 (Petra) -- Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will perform in the ancient city of Petra on Nov. 27 as part of his "Romanza" world tour, marking 30 years of his musical career.
The concert, organized by the Friends of Jordan Festivals in partnership with the Jordan Tourism Board, is part of efforts to strengthen Jordan’s position as a cultural tourism destination and attract major international musical events to the Kingdom.
The performance will bring Bocelli, one of the world’s leading classical and operatic voices, to Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Jordan’s most prominent archaeological attractions.
Travel News Group quoted Friends of Jordan Festivals Executive Director Suha Bawab as saying that hosting an artist of Bocelli’s stature in Petra provides an opportunity to showcase Jordan internationally through music and reinforce its appeal as a destination combining heritage with cultural experiences.
Bawab noted that the concert will be accompanied by experiences and activities highlighting archaeology, heritage and local culture, with artisans, producers and local businesses involved to broaden the event’s economic and cultural impact on the community.
Born in Italy’s Tuscany region, Bocelli rose to international prominence after winning the Sanremo Music Festival in 1994 and has built a career spanning opera, classical music and popular song.
His recordings have sold more than 90 million copies worldwide, and he has performed at major international events, including the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup, while collaborating with leading conductors, musicians and singers.
His honors include a Golden Globe, seven Classical BRIT Awards, seven World Music Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Petra, whose history stretches back more than 2,000 years, is renowned for its Nabataean rock-cut architecture, tombs, temples and sophisticated water systems, as well as its historical role along ancient trade routes.
The concert forms part of efforts to use Jordan’s archaeological and heritage sites as venues for cultural and artistic events, diversifying the Kingdom’s tourism offerings and promoting cultural tourism.
The concert also highlights Jordan’s broader arts and cultural scene, which includes cultural events and institutions in Amman and the Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts, which has brought together archaeological settings and live performances since its launch in 1981.
Organizers also aim to connect the event with Petra’s heritage, local culture and community, helping extend its benefits to the destination while encouraging visitors to explore Jordan’s wider tourism and cultural offerings.
