ASEZA, Tunisian Experts Discuss Cooperation on Aqaba UNESCO Global Geopark Project

Aqaba, June 29 (Petra) -- The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) has discussed with a Tunisian technical delegation ways to strengthen cooperation on the Aqaba UNESCO Global Geopark project, focusing on the preparation of the nomination dossier and the exchange of technical expertise.

ASEZA Chief Commissioner Shadi Al Majali received the delegation, headed by Director General of Tunisia's National Office of Mines Mohammed Ben Salem and accompanied by Zaher Geopark Project Director Mohsen Ben Hussein.

According to a statement issued by ASEZA on Monday, the meeting was attended by members of the Board of Commissioners, representatives of the Royal Scientific Society, including Dr. Nishat Hmaidan, and a number of specialists.

Discussions focused on mechanisms for preparing Aqaba's nomination file in accordance with UNESCO's requirements and benefiting from Tunisia's experience in joining the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety Nidal Al Aouran said the geopark project is one of ASEZA's strategic initiatives, highlighting its role in preserving geological and natural heritage while supporting Aqaba's position as a destination for geological and eco-tourism.

He stressed the importance of drawing on successful regional experiences, particularly Tunisia's, in advancing the project.

The Tunisian delegation presented its experience in preparing a UNESCO nomination dossier, outlining the technical criteria for accreditation and the contribution of geoparks to local development, geological heritage conservation and national and international partnerships.

The two sides also reviewed the proposed components of the Aqaba Geopark, including geological sites, archaeological landmarks, wildlife habitats and local communities, as part of an integrated approach that links natural heritage conservation with cultural, economic and sustainable development objectives.

The discussions form part of efforts to complete Aqaba's nomination for membership in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
