Shawarbah Appointed UCLG Vice President for Middle East, West Asia

Amman, June 26 (Petra)-- Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) announced on Friday that the Chairperson of its Committee, Yousef Shawarbah, has been appointed Vice President of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Organization for the Middle East and West Asia region for the 2026–2029 term.

The appointment was made following elections for the organization's Presidency Bureau, held on the sidelines of the UCLG Congress and the World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, hosted by the Moroccan city of Tangier.

The elections resulted in the selection of Ugur Ibrahim Altay, Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, as President of UCLG for the 2026–2029 term.

The newly elected co-presidents are Bheke Stofile, President of the South African Local Government Association; Aysen Nikolayev, Head of the Republic of Sakha; Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague; Cristian Zamora, Mayor of Cuenca; and Berry Vrbanovic, Mayor of Kitchener.

The new leadership also includes Fatimetou Abdel Malick, President of the Nouakchott Region, as Chair of UCLG's Standing Committee on Gender Equality, while Fatiha El Moudni, Mayor of Rabat, was appointed Treasurer of the United Cities and Local Governments Organization for the current term.
