Vatican Media Spotlights Jordan’s Preparations for the Bicentenary of Christ’s Baptism in 2030

Amman, Aug. 13 (Petra) -- Jordan’s ongoing preparations to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River in 2030 have drawn widespread international attention, spearheaded by prominent coverage across Vatican media platforms and international outlets.

The international spotlight follows the inaugural meeting of the high-level national committee tasked with overseeing the 2030 preparations under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, encompassing comprehensive programs and projects befitting the site's immense historical and religious significance.

The official Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, dedicated space in its Tuesday morning edition--the day following the committee's meeting--to cover Jordan’s preparations for the landmark anniversary. Additionally, the Holy See's broader media network picked up the report from the Jordan News Agency (Petra), distributing it across multiple languages including Arabic, English, and Italian to reach millions of international readers.

This coverage underscores the global stature of the Holy See and the Catholic Church, providing Jordan with an invaluable platform to introduce international audiences to the Baptism Site, other holy Christian sites, and the Kingdom's rich religious, cultural, and humanitarian heritage.

Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media, Father Rifat Bader, emphasized to Petra that strong media linkages exist between Jordan and the Vatican via local Catholic churches, the Apostolic Nunciature in Amman, and ongoing professional relationships with editors, news directors, and spokespersons across the Holy See's communication organs, including Vatican media director Andrea Tornielli and press spokesperson Matteo Bruni.

Bader noted that the upcoming phase requires building upon these relations to consistently project Jordan’s message globally, positioning the media as a core partner in the years-long preparations and inviting international Christian pilgrims to experience the spiritual depth of the site where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist.

He further highlighted that upcoming leadership developments within the Vatican’s communications directorate--including the appointment of Maria Montserrat Alvarado as head of the Holy See’s Dicastery for Communication effective November 2026--present an ideal opportunity to extend official invitations for international media figures to visit Al-Maghtas, inspect national preparations firsthand, and expand international media coverage for this historic event.

Concluding his remarks, Bader stressed that the resonance generated by the high committee's inaugural meeting across Vatican and international media serves as a clear indicator of the massive opportunity available for Jordan to solidify its international media presence and remind the world that the land of the baptism remains a beacon of peace, encounter, and pilgrimage.
