Acting House Speaker : Lower House Passes 19 Priority Laws During Current Ordinary Session

Amman, May 8 (Petra)-- Lower House Acting Speaker Khamees Attieh, said the Lower House had completed a package of legislation and laws during the current ordinary session covering various economic, social, and political sectors, in addition to holding oversight sessions addressing key national issues.

Speaking during an interview on the Jordan Television's 60 Minutes program, hosted by journalist Anas Al-Majali, Attieh said the House had worked in a spirit of teamwork consistent with the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the broader political modernization agenda.

Attieh noted that the House discussed and approved 19 out of 23 priority draft laws submitted during the session.

He stressed that the House of Representatives had focused on strengthening its legislative role alongside its oversight responsibilities by monitoring government performance, holding specialized oversight sessions, and listening to citizens’ concerns and issues affecting their daily lives, in a way that enhances transparency and accountability.

Attieh said parliamentary committees played a central role in finalizing legislation and key files through extensive dialogue with official institutions, professional associations, and civil society organizations to ensure laws serve the national interest and take different viewpoints into account.

He also affirmed that the House would continue its work in the coming phase, including amendments to its internal regulations in line with the political modernization framework and the principle of collective institutional work. He added that Jordan’s party and bloc-based parliamentary experience still needs more time and should not be judged prematurely.

Attieh pointed to ongoing cooperation with the government on issues related to investment, reducing poverty and unemployment, and enhancing communication with citizens in a manner that supports national development and meets Jordanians’ aspirations.

Responding to questions during the program, Attieh said parliamentary committees had held nearly 350 meetings. He added that the formation of permanent committees contributed to more flexible discussions of draft laws, noting that only minimal amendments were made under the dome during parliamentary sessions.

He emphasized that the number of oversight sessions alone should not be the sole measure of parliamentary performance, pointing out that around 248 interventions were presented during legislative sessions.

Attieh added that if an extraordinary parliamentary session is convened, lawmakers are expected to discuss the Local Administration Law and the Real Estate Ownership Law, while amendments to the House’s internal regulations also remain possible.

He concluded by saying that the House of Representatives is required to intensify its work in the coming stage due to the many challenges facing the country.
