LH committee discusses grid connection to Al-Hammad, Al-Sarhan basins

Amman, May 13 (Petra) –Lower House (LH) Agriculture and Water Committee, chaired by MP Dr. Ahmed Shdeifat, discussed on Wednesday the possibility of connecting electricity to agricultural areas in Al-Hammad and Al-Sarhan basins, aimed at supporting agricultural projects and boosting investment.

Shdeifat stated electricity connection would contribute to reducing operational costs, stimulating agricultural expansion, and achieving sustainable development, mainly given the focus on enhancing food security and supporting the agricultural sector.

Talking at the session, he called for providing the necessary infrastructure for farmers and investors to ensure continuity of their projects and their positive impact on the national economy.

Shdeifat, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad Hyari, other high-ranking officials, called for expediting the procedures for expanding coverage of power networks, which would "positively impact sustainability" of agricultural projects and the employment of local workers.

Meanwhile, Ziad Sa’aydeh, Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) confirmed the Commission is working on preparing the necessary studies and coordinating with various relevant stakeholders, adding that the EMRC's established procedures allow extension of grid services to licensed water wells.

Several farmers reviewed the challenges facing investors in the two basins and ways to overcome these obstacles, within the framework of supporting government plans to develop the Badia regions and invest in agricultural lands.
