Senate President Announces Parliamentary Outreach to Advance Messages of King’s UN Address

Amman, Sept. 28 (Petra) -- Senate President Faisal Fayez said that the Senate will step up parliamentary outreach to convey the key messages of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, particularly on the Palestinian issue and the need for international action to uphold international law.

Speaking on Al-Mamlaka TV’s "Al-Asherah" program on Sunday evening, Fayez described the King’s address as a clear articulation of Jordan’s position on regional developments and a "historic document" that should be studied, saying it conveyed messages to the international community on the Palestinian issue, Israeli violations and the need to respect international law and international treaties.

Fayez said the Senate plans to send messages to speakers of parliaments around the world outlining the main points of the King’s address and urging international action, including economic measures and sanctions against Israel, to pressure it to halt what he described as violations.

He said the parliamentary outreach would target a broad range of countries, stressing the importance of expanding diplomatic and economic pressure beyond Western countries and the European Union to major Asian trading partners, including China, Japan and South Korea. He also called for translating international support for the two-state solution into practical measures.

Fayez highlighted the King’s longstanding advocacy for the Palestinian cause at international forums, citing his 2007 address to the US Congress and speeches before the European Parliament and other regional and international gatherings.

He said the King’s recent address to the UN placed the international community before its responsibilities regarding Israel’s compliance with international agreements and its actions in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

On domestic affairs, Fayez stressed the importance of strengthening national cohesion, maintaining national unity and countering attempts to undermine public trust in state institutions. He called for greater direct communication with citizens and increased public awareness of the challenges facing Jordan.

Regarding Israeli military actions in southern Syria, particularly in the Yarmouk Basin, Fayez said they raise concerns for Jordan’s national security, particularly water security, given the importance of the Jordan and Yarmouk rivers and their sources.

He called for a comprehensive Arab strategy on political and economic security, the reactivation and updating of the Arab Joint Defense Agreement, and greater regional economic and political integration.

On relations with Iran, Fayez said Jordan relies on diplomacy and dialogue but rejects attacks or interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries or any threats to Jordan’s national security. He stressed that Jordan remains open to dialogue with Iran provided the sovereignty of Arab states is respected.
