Amman, Feb. 26 (Petra) – Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, joined by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), on Thursday for a visit to the National Center for Rehabilitation of Addicts in Amman.
Health Minister Ibrahim Bdour, who accompanied the Duke and Duchess, said that mental health and addiction treatment have become national priorities, reflecting Jordan’s recognition of mental well-being as a cornerstone of public health, social stability, and sustainable development.
According to a Health Ministry statement, Bdour said the ministry has adopted a comprehensive national framework centered on prevention and expanded treatment services. The approach integrates physical, psychological, and social care within a unified system to improve responsiveness and service quality.
He said 73 mental health clinics are now operating across the Kingdom’s governorates, broadening access and promoting equity in service delivery. The minister highlighted recent progress in addiction treatment, including the establishment of a new inpatient facility supported by WHO.
Bdour added that the National Center Hospital for Mental Health provides short-term residential care and outpatient services, including medically supervised detoxification, psychological support, and social counseling.
Reaffirming continued cooperation with international partners, Bdour underscored Jordan’s commitment to aligning its services with global best practices and to investing in mental health as a foundation for societal security and long-term development.
During the visit, the delegation received a briefing from the center’s director, Ahmed Huneiti, on operational procedures and rehabilitation programs. They also reviewed the center’s medical, psychological, and social services, and heard accounts of patients’ recovery and reintegration.
