House Committee, Japanese Envoy Discuss Energy Cooperation

Amman, April 22 (Petra) -- The Lower House Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, chaired by MP Ayman Abu Hanieh, met Japanese Ambassador Asari Hideki on Wednesday to discuss strengthening cooperation in the energy sector and benefit from Japanese expertise and technology in the field.

According to a committee statement, Abu Hanieh called for drawing on Japan's experience in energy and energy storage, pointing to Jordan's plans to use green hydrogen as a sustainable energy alternative.

The lawmaker expressed the need to support this path through international partnerships, particularly with Japan, given its "advanced" expertise.

He also underscored the importance of conducting a joint study with experts from both countries on introducing artificial intelligence and digital transformation technologies into the energy sector, aimed to reduce costs, improve consumption efficiency, make use of silica, and develop energy storage solutions.

Meanwhile, MPs Talal Nsour, Saleh Abu Tayeh, Iman Abbasi, and Rakeen Abu Hanieh stressed the importance of attracting investment into Jordan's energy sector and praised Japan's experience in energy and storage technologies.

The Japanese ambassador, in turn, said the energy sector is one of the main pillars of the economy and development, referring to his visit to Aqaba to review the city's advanced experience in the sector.

He called for "deeper cooperation and greater" exchange of expertise between the two countries, while also highlighting Jordan's important role in supporting regional stability.

The ambassador added that Japan is moving to raise the share of renewable energy to 40 percent, while also diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on oil.
