Amman, April 2 (Petra) -- The National Center for Human Rights (NCHR) took part in the annual meeting and conference of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The Center was represented by Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Samar Haj Hassan, accompanied by Director of the International Cooperation Department Nidal Muqabala.

In a statement issued Thursday, the NCHR said the conference serves as a high-level platform bringing together heads and representatives of national human rights institutions worldwide to address emerging human rights issues, exchange expertise, and enhance international cooperation frameworks aimed at protecting and promoting human rights.

The statement noted that the meetings, which began Monday, opened with sessions of regional networks, including the Asia-Pacific Forum, the European Network, the Americas Network, and the African Network of National Human Rights Institutions, each addressing key challenges and opportunities within their respective regions.

It added that the GANHRI Executive Bureau, chaired by Amina Bouayach, convened to discuss organizational and administrative matters, alongside agenda items that included the adoption of previous resolutions, ratification of Executive Bureau membership, and a review of periodic activity reports for both the global alliance and its regional networks.

The meetings also featured presentations from international partners, notably the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Development Program, covering accreditation processes, adoption of the 2025 financial report, and deliberations on the proposed 2026 work plan and budget.

Discussions further addressed the exchange of expertise and best practices, with a focus on issues related to displaced persons.

On the sidelines of the conference, Haj Hassan chaired a seminar organized by the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, in cooperation with the Independent Commission for Human Rights, titled "Defending International Law and the Multilateral System: The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in an Era of Decline." The seminar examined mounting challenges facing the international legal order and underscored the role of national institutions in reinforcing adherence to it.

Haj Hassan also participated in a symposium organized by the Omani Institution for Human Rights, presenting a working paper titled "The Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights in Light of the Unstable Conditions in the Middle East," which reviewed key challenges and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence technologies and their implications for human rights systems, particularly in crisis-affected environments.
