Industry Minister: Comprehensive plan to ensure supply of basic goods, stable prices

Amman, March 30 (Petra) – Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply Yarub Qudah said on Monday the ministry has put in place a comprehensive and integrated plan to address the impact of regional tensions, ensuring supply chain continuity, essential goods availability, and price stability.

The ministry is seeking to bolster strategic reserves of basic goods in cooperation and partnership with the private sector, which demonstrated a high level of responsibility and cooperation in supporting and replenishing the Kingdom's reserves, he told Petra in an interview.

Qudah said the ministry is carrying out effective and intensive monitoring across the Kingdom to ensure staple goods are available and prevent hoarding and manipulation of prices, vowing to apply the full forces of the law against violators.

"The ministry will intervene directly to control prices if any unjustified discrepancies or excesses are detected between production or import costs and selling prices, particularly regarding staple food items," he said. "This will be achieved through setting price ceilings to guarantee fairness and maintain market stability," he added.

Qudah said the government supports the civil and military consumer corporations to secure quantities of basis food commodities at reasonable prices.

He assured that the Kingdom's food supply situation is under control with quantities of commodities available, given a normal flow of imports through land border crossings and the Port of Aqaba.

The minister said current wheat reserves in the Kingdom, plus contracted quantities, are enough for over 10 months and barley for about 8 months. Other commodities, such as sugar, rice, oils, and legumes are enough for up to three months, he added.
