Amman, March 31 (Petra) -- The Lower House Women and Family Affairs Committee on Tuesday held talks with the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to explore ways to enhance the representation and participation of women with disabilities in the draft local administration law.

The meeting focused on promoting justice and equality, while reinforcing efforts to protect the rights of women, families, and persons with disabilities.

Committee Chair Faliha Khudair, said the meeting provides an important platform to strengthen joint efforts in protecting women and family rights and supporting the inclusion of persons with disabilities. She voiced hope for productive discussions leading to practical steps and effective initiatives.

MPs stressed that women are equal partners with men in political, economic, and social life, underscoring the need to ensure representation of persons with disabilities in elected councils.

Former MP and administrative development expert Ali Hajajeh said the new draft local administration law should ensure representation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in local and municipal councils.

UNDP senior programme coordinator Diana Jreisat highlighted the need to strengthen the presence and representation of persons with disabilities in local and municipal bodies.

Rawan Barakat, coordinator of the Women’s Committee at the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, called for increasing the share of women with disabilities in the draft law.

Rami Zloum, a member of the council’s Women’s Committee, stressed the importance of integrating persons with disabilities into local and municipal councils and called for reviewing draft laws to ensure they safeguard their rights before adoption.

Gender equality expert at UNDP Ghadir Majali said the participation of women and persons with disabilities in political and economic life, as well as decision-making positions, has become essential.
