Arab Media Integral to National Security, Stability, Says Gov't Communication Minister

Amman, Sept. 2 (Petra) -- Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani on Wednesday described Arab and national media outlets as an integral part of the national security and stability system in Arab countries, stressing their role in shaping public awareness, defending just Arab causes, and countering misinformation amid the rapid flow of information.

Momani made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the General Secretariat of the Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA), stressing the deep ties and continued cooperation between Jordan and sister Arab countries.

He commended the efforts of FANA and Arab news agencies to present accurate information professionally, calling on the federation’s General Secretariat to further develop the capabilities of official media agencies and provide more sophisticated content for Arab audiences.

Momani said official news agencies should have a stronger presence in shaping media discourse and communicating with local, Arab and international public opinion in a balanced and effective manner.

He stressed that the role of national and official media goes beyond news reporting and professional standards, describing it as an integral component of efforts to safeguard national interests and just causes, counter attempts to undermine the positions of Arab states, and uphold their right to protect their security and stability and advance their economies.

On technological developments, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), Momani said Jordan is approaching the AI revolution seriously and consciously. He noted that the government has developed a general policy governing the use of AI tools, including requirements to attribute AI-generated content.

He also referred to a government circular prohibiting the use of AI tools to reproduce sovereign symbols, including the national emblem and flag, to preserve their value and accuracy and prevent distortion.

Momani said the Ministry of Government Communication is also working to expand Jordan’s experience in media literacy by raising awareness of AI tools and their potential risks, particularly among school students.

He added that efforts are underway to establish a specialized team within the ministry to harness emerging technologies in producing media content in innovative ways aimed at youth and future generations.

Momani called for embracing rapid technological advances rather than resisting them, stressing the need to harness their potential while remaining alert to their risks. He also underscored the importance of continued coordination and joint Arab action, drawing on successful experiences among official news agencies.

Members of the Arab media delegation expressed their appreciation to Jordan for its hospitality and praised the pioneering role of Jordanian media and the Jordan News Agency (Petra) in strengthening joint Arab action and presenting a reliable picture of events.

The delegation reviewed key themes and challenges addressed during FANA meetings in Amman, particularly mechanisms for responding to the rapid flow of news, leveraging AI to enhance media production and counter misinformation, and strengthening cooperation among Arab news agencies.

They also stressed the importance of Arab solidarity in confronting campaigns targeting Arab rights and positions, as well as continued technological development to ensure that the Arab media message reaches its target audiences effectively and with greater impact.
