Cairo, Oct. 14 (Petra) -- Arab Parliament President Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Yamahi strongly condemned Colombia’s decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem, denouncing the move as a flagrant violation of international law and UN legitimacy resolutions.
Al-Yamahi stated that the decision constitutes an unacceptable infringement on the national and historical rights of the Palestinian people and an illegitimate attempt to impose a de facto reality on the Holy City.
Stressing that Jerusalem is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territories, Al-Yamahi emphasized that its legal and historical status cannot be compromised. He affirmed that any unilateral measures aiming to alter the city's identity or legal standing are null and void, carrying no legal effect.
Al-Yamahi urged Colombia to immediately reverse its decision and comply with relevant United Nations resolutions affirming the illegality of measures altering Jerusalem's status. He also called on the international community and the UN Security Council to shoulder their responsibilities in countering attempts to alter the realities on the ground in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Arab Parliament president warned that such steps undermine prospects for a just and comprehensive peace and severely threaten the foundations of the two-state solution. He reiterated that recognizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people foremost among them the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital is the only path to lasting peace.
