Amman, June 27 (Petra) -- Jordan's second National Conference on Climate Change and Green Economy concluded in Amman on Saturday, with participants calling for an accelerated transition to electric transit and a shift from climate risk management to comprehensive development policies.
The two-day event, held under the theme "National Integration in Climate Action: From Adaptation to Transformation," brought together government bodies, regional and international organizations, and private sector representatives to map out paths toward a green economy, sustainable transit, and low-emission cities.
During a panel titled "Electric Mobility: Today's Reality and Tomorrow's Opportunities," discussions centered on infrastructure challenges for charging stations, regulatory frameworks, and investment opportunities in the Arab region.
Mohammad Ghabas, sales and operations director at EV infrastructure developer GRASEN, highlighted the regional potential for smart infrastructure and low-emission buses. A visual presentation by Chinese electric bus manufacturer Yutong also showcased clean energy models aimed at reducing long-term operational costs and emissions in public transit.
Panels on urban resilience emphasized sustainable town planning, green infrastructure, and expanded renewable energy use to bolster water, food, and energy security.
The conference concluded with recommendations to boost international partnerships in clean technology and climate finance, streamline green national policies, and reinforce Jordan's position as a regional hub for the green transition.
On the sidelines of the event, the Ministry of Environment signed two separate agreements to advance its green agenda.
The first, a memorandum of understanding signed by Environment Minister Ayman Suleiman and Malik Haddad, secretary-general of the Arab Union of Land Transport, establishes a technical framework to measure and study carbon emissions from commercial land transport. The study will build a unified methodology to track emissions based on vehicle age, fuel type, and mileage, creating a database to shape future climate policy.
The second agreement, signed by Minister Suleiman and Khaled Al-Zoubi, general manager of the Jordan Petroleum Products Marketing Company (JoPetrol), launches a joint environmental awareness campaign.
The partnership with JoPetrol will focus on curbing littering through the distribution of reusable car waste bags and the installation of designated recycling bins and educational signage across gas stations nationwide.
