Amman, Oct. 12 (Petra) - The Jordan Economic Forum (JEF) issued a position paper on Monday analyzing trade, investment, and growth opportunities between Jordan and Malaysia.
The paper coincides with His Majesty King Abdullah II's state visit to Malaysia on Oct. 11–12, at the invitation of Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Iskandar, marking over six decades of diplomatic ties established in 1965.
Trade between Jordan and Malaysia grew 12 percent during the first seven months of 2026 to reach USD146.6 million, compared to USD130.8 million during the same period in 2025. Jordanian exports to Malaysia surged 32.4 percent to USD33 million, while imports rose 7.2 percent to USD113.6 million.
Despite the growth, the forum noted that total trade volume remains relatively low given the size of both economies, signaling significant room for expansion and product diversification.
The paper showcased strong socio-economic ties, noting that Malaysia hosted 8,957 Jordanian visitors in 2025, while Jordan welcomed 8,033 Malaysian tourists.
Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education statistics show 2,075 Malaysian students enrolled in Jordanian universities in 2025, placing Jordan second among Arab host countries for Malaysian students.
Reflecting on Malaysia’s economic development, JEF noted that Malaysia’s economy grew 5.2 percent in 2025, driven by services and manufacturing, which accounted for 82.5 percent of its gross domestic product.
To leverage this growth, the forum called for an executive action program to diversify Jordanian exports in pharmaceuticals, processed food, agriculture, digital services, logistics, tourism, and the global halal economy through mutual certification standards.
To translate the opportunities into tangible outcomes, the forum recommended establishing a joint Jordanian-Malaysian business council, providing detailed market data, and integrating small and medium enterprises into global supply chains.
JEF called on the government to create a structured follow-up plan with clear timelines and performance indicators to maximize economic returns, support national productivity, and enhance competitiveness.
