GAM head, Kazakh ambassador discuss urban cooperation

Amman, October 14 (Petra) – Head of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Committee, Ahmad Malkawi met on Wednesday with Kazakh Ambassador to Jordan, Talgat Shaldanbay.

During the meeting at the GAM's headquarters, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the cities of Amman and Astana, as well as mechanisms for joint cooperation and action across various sectors.

Malkawi praised the Jordanian-Kazakh relations, which are founded on ongoing collaboration.

He emphasized GAM’s commitment to bolstering bilateral ties, supporting joint initiatives between Amman and Astana, and opening new avenues for cooperation that contribute to delivering "quality services and fostering sustainable development." For his part, Shaldanbay highlighted the "deep" ties linking the two friendly nations.

The diplomat commended Amman's development in various areas of municipal work, as well as GAM’s efforts to upgrade infrastructure and enhance quality of services provided to the city and its residents.

He also expressed his government's readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise in areas of mutual interest, aiming to achieve benefits for both countries.

Greater Amman Municipality has signed a twinning agreement with the Municipality of Astana, which facilitates the exchange of expertise and information in fields such as urban planning, environmental protection, public health, and city infrastructure.

The two cities also cooperate in cultural activities, heritage and history preservation, and the exchange of visits and delegations regarding municipal operations.

In 2010, the GAM named a street in Amman's Tariq district after Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev , in addition to naming "Abai" Street in the Zahran district.

Meanwhile, two streets in the Kazakh capital, Astana, were named after the late King Hussein bin Talal and the city of Amman.
