Amman, March 3 (Petra) -- Jordan and Norway on Tuesday signed a new climate cooperation agreement aimed at reducing emissions from the Kingdom’s waste sector, under international cooperation mechanisms established by the Paris Agreement.

Talking at the signing ceremony, Environment Minister Ayman Suleiman said the agreement provides an operational framework to activate bilateral cooperation through market-based approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

He said this effort would strengthen Jordan’s capacity to deliver "measurable, reportable, and verifiable" (MRV) emission reductions in line with high standards of environmental integrity.

He said the transfer of emission-reduction units will be aligned with Jordan’s nationally determined contributions (NDCs) within a transparent accounting system designed to avoid double counting and deliver tangible climate impact.

The agreement, he added, supports Jordan’s transition toward low-emissions development, while helping catalyze the flow of high-quality green investment.

In turn, Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Eriksen said expanded international cooperation is essential to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Eriksen said the agreement will enable Jordan to reduce waste-sector emissions, with Norway financing the efforts through the purchase of carbon credits generated by emission-reduction projects.

Eriksen noted that the waste sector is a major global source of emissions, particularly in developing countries that require technical and financial support to strengthen sustainable, environmentally sound waste management.

The agreement is part of Norway’s "broader" efforts to help build an effective global carbon market and advance international cooperation to address climate change.
