Damascus, Jan. 26 (Petra) – Jordan and Syria on Monday signed a natural gas sale and purchase agreement in Damascus, under which Syria will be supplied with natural gas through Jordanian territory, as part of efforts to support the Syrian electricity sector and mitigate energy shortages.

The agreement was signed by Director General of the National Electric Power Company Sofian Bataineh and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Syrian Petroleum Company Hashem Saleh, in the presence of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh and Syria’s Minister of Energy Mohammed Bashir.

Kharabsheh said the agreement stipulates that Jordan will supply Syria with approximately four million cubic meters of natural gas per day, equivalent to around 140 million cubic feet. He noted that these volumes will directly contribute to improving the stability of the Syrian electricity grid and supporting the operation of power generation plants.

He added that Jordan began supplying Syria with natural gas on January 1, 2026, at daily quantities ranging between 30 million and 90 million cubic feet, as part of urgent measures to support the Syrian energy sector and help reduce power outages.

Kharabsheh explained that the project is based on Jordan’s advanced energy infrastructure, including a floating storage and regasification unit at the Port of Aqaba, which receives liquefied natural gas from global markets, regasifies it, and pumps it through the Arab Gas Pipeline to Damascus, given the absence of the necessary infrastructure on the Syrian side.

He said the agreement reflects Jordan’s commitment to its pivotal role as a regional energy hub and embodies the Kingdom’s approach to supporting Syria and strengthening Arab economic integration. He added that the project is part of Jordan’s ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation with Syria and meet part of its natural gas needs, leading to a tangible improvement in electricity supply in accordance with approved operational plans.
