Senate Committee, Chinese Envoy Discuss Ties, Region

Amman, April 21 (Petra) -- The Senate's Jordanian-Chinese Friendship Committee, headed by Senator Issa Murad, discussed with Chinese Ambassador Guo Wei strengthening relations in the parliamentary, economic, investment, and trade fields.

Murad said Jordanian-Chinese relations, which span more than five decades, continue to develop under a "strategic partnership that has seen notable progress." In this context, Murad referred to His Majesty King Abdullah II's directives to deepen bilateral ties through mutual official visits, coupled with the Chinese leadership's interest in expanding joint cooperation.

Talking at the meeting, Murad called for activating and building on the mutual agreements signed by the two sides, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and the transfer of Chinese technology.

He also called for benefiting from advanced experiences and exchanging expertise in ways that serve shared interests and support economic growth.

Murad also pointed to the repercussions of regional tensions triggered by the American-Israeli-Iranian war on the global economy, particularly disruptions to global trade flows and rising shipping and insurance costs.

He stressed the importance of strengthening Jordanian-Chinese cooperation to help develop "flexible solutions that support market stability and ensure the continued flow of goods and services." At the regional level, he said the Palestinian issue remains at the top of Jordan's priorities, highlighting the Kingdom's firm position, under His Majesty King Abdullah II's leadership in supporting the Palestinian people's right to establish an independent state.

He also referred to China's support for the historical Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

In turn, the Chinese ambassador said his country is keen to enhance cooperation with Jordan across various fields, especially in the economic and investment sectors, support joint projects, and expand trade cooperation to promote sustainable development in both countries.

He also highlighted Jordan's "pivotal" role in the region under His Majesty King Abdullah II's leadership in promoting security, stability, and peace.

The diplomat stressed the importance of de-escalation and diplomatic solutions for their positive impact on regional stability and safety of global trade routes.

The committee members, for their part, called for expanding cooperation in media and education, broadening cultural and academic exchange programs and scholarships, and strengthening partnerships between Jordanian and Chinese universities.

The senators also urged exploring tourism cooperation opportunities and twinning cities and archaeological sites, such as Umm Al Jimal, which is listed as a World Heritage site.
