Amman, March 24 (Petra) -- A significant deterioration in weather conditions is expected from Wednesday, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flood risks forecast across multiple regions as a strong instability system develops, the Jordan Meteorological Department said.

Relatively cold conditions will prevail on Tuesday under partly cloudy to overcast skies, with a chance of scattered showers around midday that may be accompanied by thunder. Westerly winds are expected to remain moderate, while fog may reduce visibility during the morning hours over highlands and parts of the plains.

The weather pattern is expected to shift decisively on Wednesday as atmospheric instability strengthens. Rainfall is forecast to begin in southern regions, including Aqaba, before spreading northward to cover wider areas, including the capital. Some downpours are expected to be heavy, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, raising the risk of flash flooding in valleys and low-lying areas, particularly around the Dead Sea.

By Wednesday night, a colder and more humid air mass associated with a low-pressure system is expected to deepen the unsettled conditions, bringing a further drop in temperatures and more widespread rainfall, especially across northern and central regions before extending to other parts of the country. Rain may be heavy at times, particularly in western areas.

The system is expected to persist into Thursday, with cold, cloudy and rainy conditions dominating most regions. Periods of heavy rainfall are likely in some areas, accompanied by thunder and hail, increasing the risk of flooding and rising water levels in valleys and low-lying areas, including Aqaba and the Dead Sea.

Early Thursday, there is a possibility of brief sleet or light snow mixed with rain over the highest southern mountain peaks, while strong westerly winds with gusts of up to 60 km/h are expected to add to hazardous conditions.

Conditions are expected to ease slightly on Friday, with a modest rise in temperatures and lingering showers in western regions before rainfall gradually tapers off and winds begin to subside.

Temperatures in eastern Amman on Tuesday are expected to range between 16 C and 7 C, compared with 14 C and 5 C in western Amman, while Aqaba is forecast to record highs of around 26 C and lows near 14 C.
