Cairo, Oct. 14 (Petra) - The Arab League and Egypt decried Colombia’s decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem, warning that the move violates international law and undermines efforts toward a two-state solution.
The league condemned the move as a disregard for the legal and political status of East Jerusalem, which remains occupied Palestinian territory and the designated capital of a future Palestinian state.
In its statement, the Arab League noted that the decision went forward despite repeated warnings to Colombian officials, flouting international consensus and infringing on Palestinian national rights.
The bloc stressed that unilateral diplomatic moves cannot alter Jerusalem’s legal status under international law, citing UN Security Council Resolution 478 (1980), which calls on nations to withdraw diplomatic missions from the city, and Resolution 2334 (2016), which rejects changes to pre-1967 borders unless agreed upon by both parties.
Noting that East Jerusalem must serve as the capital of an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders, the League urged Colombia to reverse its decision and adhere to the UN Charter and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry echoed the rejection, labeling the embassy opening a "blatant violation" of international legitimacy that attempts to enforce a void status quo on the holy city.
Cairo said that any unilateral actions seeking to alter Jerusalem’s legal or historical status are "null and void" under international law.
