Amman, Sept. 23 (Petra) - The Ministry of Water and Irrigation signed a 3.3 million euro (approximately JD2.7 million) consulting agreement on Wednesday with a consortium comprising Germany's Fichtner Water and Transportation GmbH (FWT) and Jordan's Engicon to advance biogas energy generation at wastewater treatment plants across the Kingdom.

The agreement falls under Phase II of the KfW Development Bank-backed results-based financing (RBF) program. The broader initiative is funded by 20 million euros (approximately JD16.1 million) through German bilateral cooperation, alongside a 10 million euro (approximately JD8.1 million) grant from the European Union.

The program focuses on upgrading wastewater facilities in West Jerash, East Jerash, and Kufranja, alongside modernizing sludge treatment and biogas infrastructure. Under the project model, the winning contractor will execute construction and manage operations and maintenance for 15 years, linking design and execution to long-term operational efficiency.

By capturing biogas produced during wastewater treatment to generate clean electricity, the project seeks to cut grid reliance, lower operational costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Improved effluent quality will also provide a safe, sustainable water source for agricultural irrigation, easing pressure on Jordan’s conventional water resources.

Ministry officials noted that the initiative aligns with national priorities under the Economic Modernization Vision (2026–2029) to bolster water security, expand resource reuse, and promote public-private partnerships.
