Amman, Jan. 7 (Petra) -- Jordan will host a Jordanian-European summit on Thursday, with the participation of His Majesty King Abdullah II, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The trilateral summit is the first of its kind since the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Jordan and the European Union.
The summit will focus on enhancing political and economic cooperation under the framework of the agreement, signed in January 2025, and will address key regional and international developments.
During His Majesty’s visit to Brussels in January 2025, he and the President of the European Commission witnessed the signing of the agreement, which includes an economic support package of approximately €3 billion for 2025–2027. The package comprises €640 million in grants, €1.4 billion in investments, and around €1 billion allocated for macroeconomic support.
His Majesty King Abdullah II addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg last June, highlighting the importance of strengthening Jordan-EU relations. He underscored the EU’s vital role in promoting peace and stability in the region and Jordan’s commitment to continued cooperation across various sectors.
The European Union has been one of Jordan’s largest international donors for decades, funding programs and projects in multiple sectors. Jordan also benefits from the simplified rules of origin agreement with the EU, which supports exports and the competitiveness of its industrial sector.
Jordan’s exports to EU countries reached JD 520 million in the first ten months of last year, compared to JD 357 million for the same period in 2014, an increase of 45.6 percent. Imports during the same period totaled JD 2.647 billion, up from JD 2.355 billion in 2014, a 12.3 percent increase. Clothing, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, chemical products, and agricultural goods are Jordan’s main exports to the EU, while vehicles, industrial machinery, and electrical and electronic equipment are the most significant imports.
