Amman, March 17 (Petra) -- Chair of the Senate Women’s Committee, Khawla Al-Armouti, along with committee members Asia Yaghi and Naseema Al-Fakhri, participated on Tuesday in activities marking International Women’s Day.
The events are organized by the ministerial committee for women’s empowerment under the patronage of Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development, the National Committee for Women’s Affairs, and UN Women in Jordan.
In her speech, Al-Armouti praised the active role of Jordanian women in the nation’s progress and their contribution to development across political, economic, and social fields, extending appreciation to the mothers of martyrs for their sacrifices in defense of the homeland.
She highlighted that, thanks to royal directives, Jordan has achieved significant progress in women’s empowerment through an integrated system targeting all segments of society. Al-Armouti noted that the Senate, in its legislative and oversight role, works to promote social justice and inclusion by empowering women as strategic partners in development.
Al-Armouti explained that the Senate has contributed to creating a supportive legislative environment enabling women’s access to decision-making positions, reflected in women’s representation in the current Senate reaching around 15 percent, in line with royal guidance.
She added that the Senate places great importance on youth empowerment, recognizing them as drivers of change and future leaders, by aligning legislation to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and participation in political and party life, as part of the political modernisation process.
Regarding persons with disabilities, Al-Armouti confirmed the Senate’s commitment to enhancing their empowerment and full integration into society through legislation that ensures active participation in the workforce and public life.
She emphasized the importance of investing in childhood by providing a safe environment and a comprehensive educational and developmental system that protects children’s rights and nurtures them with values of citizenship and creativity.
Al-Armouti also highlighted the pivotal role of the Senate Women’s Committee as a permanent committee dedicated to reviewing legislation and issues related to women, contributing to the enactment of laws supporting their political and public participation, including election, party, and labor laws, and working to remove legislative and societal barriers limiting their role.
She noted that the Senate approved constitutional amendments strengthening the state’s commitment to women’s empowerment and protection from discrimination and violence, and launched initiatives in cooperation with national and international entities to support their leadership role and enhance participation across various fields.
Al-Armouti affirmed that empowering women, youth, persons with disabilities, and protecting children are fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable development and economic growth, noting that the Senate remains committed to the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II in supporting all measures that enhance the status of Jordanians and expand their participation in national development.
