Arab Parliament Condemns Nauru’s Opening of Embassy in Occupied Jerusalem

Cairo, Sept. 11 (Petra)-- President of the Arab Parliament Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi strongly condemned the Republic of Nauru’s decision to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, describing the move as a flagrant violation of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.

Al Yamahi said the step constitutes a direct challenge to the international consensus on the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and represents an unacceptable attempt to legitimize an unlawful reality created by the occupation.

He affirmed that East Jerusalem is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing that all measures aimed at altering its legal status or historical and demographic character are null and void and have no legal effect.

He noted that UN Security Council Resolutions 476 and 478 of 1980 reaffirmed the international community’s rejection of measures seeking to alter the status of Jerusalem and called on states not to establish diplomatic missions in the city.

Al Yamahi stressed that opening an embassy in occupied Jerusalem does not create any rights for the occupying power, change the fact that the city is occupied Palestinian territory.

He warned that such steps encourage the Israeli occupation government to continue its policies of settlement expansion, annexation and the Judaization of the city, while undermining prospects for a just and lasting peace.

The Arab Parliament president called on Nauru to immediately reverse its illegal decision and comply with international legitimacy resolutions.

He stressed that Jerusalem must not be used as a bargaining chip in political negotiations and that its legal and historical status cannot be determined by unilateral decisions or diplomatic measures that violate international law.

Al Yamahi reaffirmed that the Arab Parliament would continue its efforts at both the Arab and international levels to counter any attempts aimed at eliminating the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people.

He stressed that peace and stability can only be achieved by ending the occupation and establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
