Amman, May 11 (Petra) – The Jordan Urban Development Company (JUDC) held two sessions on the Amra City project with the participation of experts and specialists to discuss the environment and energy sectors. The experts discussed the challenges and opportunities they present within the project's urban planning framework.
The sessions are part of JUDC's ongoing consultative approach aimed at engaging qualified professionals throughout all stages of the project.
Rooted in partnership with the local community and the private sector, this approach seeks to leverage expertise in developing pioneering urban models for a modern city that balances growth with quality of life, while fostering investment and job creation.
During the environment and sustainability session, participants discussed three main themes. The first focused on comprehensive environmental management, including mechanisms to protect air, soil and water quality, improve waste management and promote circular economy principles.
Discussions figured high on afforestation, expanding green spaces and preserving biodiversity as essential pillars of the city's design.
The second theme addressed climate resilience and adaptation requirements, particularly the adoption of clean and low-carbon technologies across vital sectors.
Participants reviewed strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change, including floods, rising temperatures and drought, stressing the importance of integrated urban planning capable of responding to these challenges.
The third theme focused on sustainability and the green economy.
Participants reviewed internationally recognised green building and infrastructure standards, mechanisms for attracting sustainable investment and climate finance and opportunities for green entrepreneurship and innovation.
Discussions emphasised empowering youth to play a leading role in advancing sustainability initiatives in Amra City.
Participants called for placing environmental sustainability at the core of Amra City's planning and design to ensure a balance between development needs and the preservation of natural resources.
They noted that this approach would establish a green urban model capable of addressing climate challenges and meeting the aspirations of future generations.
The energy session covered three key themes. The first focused on available power generation options for Amra and explored the most suitable renewable energy technologies aligned with the city's future needs and characteristics.
The second theme examined electricity distribution mechanisms and technologies suited to Amra's geographical landscape, in addition to tariff-setting mechanisms designed to ensure fairness and enhance the city's competitiveness.
The third theme focused on the gas network and available connection options, particularly the utilisation of the Arab Gas Pipeline and the Risha field pipeline.
Participants reviewed the infrastructure requirements needed to connect to and upgrade the existing network to serve the city effectively.
Participants called for an integrated energy system as a fundamental pillar in Amra City's development, noting that combining renewable energy sources, smart distribution networks and reliable gas infrastructure would support long-term energy security and sustainability.
