Amman, Sept. 20 (Petra) - Jordan maintained stable air quality through August 2026, keeping major gas pollutants within national safety standards while making significant gains in global environmental rankings, according to the Ministry of Environment on Sunday.

Monitoring data collected from January through August shows that major gaseous pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO), remained within limits established by Jordanian Ambient Air Quality Standard No. 1140/2024 across most monitoring stations. Isolated instances of elevated levels were largely confined to specific industrial zones, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing environmental oversight.

Measurements of coarse (PM10) and fine (PM2.5) particulate matter showed that temporary dust spikes stem mainly from natural seasonal storms and desert winds rather than local industrial emissions.

In line with the Environmental Protection Law No. 6 of 2017, the ministry conducts round-the-clock air monitoring across the Kingdom using a national network of 29 fixed stations. The system ensures ambient air meets health standards while providing a solid scientific foundation for national policy decisions.

The ministry stated its commitment to maintaining continuous surveillance and targeted inspection of industrial hot spots to resolve localized pollution sources and safeguard public health.

The results align with a major boost in Jordan's standing on the international Environmental Performance Index (EPI). The Kingdom's air quality rank surged from 81st globally in 2024 to 49th in 2026, showcasing tangible progress in national environmental management.
