Amman, Oct. 7 (Petra) - The Jordanian parliamentary delegation continued its meetings on Wednesday at the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly in Tanzania, pushing for stronger legislative cooperation, good governance, and immediate action on global crises.
Jordanian MP Omar Khaldi told the Standing Committee on UN Affairs that parliaments must act as "vital arms" of international multilateralism to resolve conflicts and uphold peace.
Citing global challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and food insecurity, Khaldi called for a broader view of national security that encompasses water, energy, food, and cybersecurity.
Pointing to His Majesty King Abdullah II's address at the UN General Assembly, Khaldi urged the international community to hold all countries accountable to international humanitarian law without double standards.
At a workshop on international humanitarian law and human rights, Jordanian MP Mo'taz Abu Rumman said that upholding human rights is "both a legal and moral obligation." Abu Rumman called on the IPU and global parliaments to unite in demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, unhindered humanitarian aid, the protection of medical staff and journalists, an end to forced displacement, and full respect for Palestinian statehood.
Speaking before the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Jordanian MP Yanal Freihat argued that true sustainability cannot exist under foreign occupation.
Freihat noted that while the world discusses green transition and AI, Palestinians in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and Jerusalem are struggling for basic survival amid the destruction of schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure.
Freihat said that Jordan is committed to its national development and renewable energy projects, as well as its historic Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, while calling for international political will to end the occupation.
